10 MALAYALAM MOVIES FROM THE 2010s YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS

The past decade was a transition of sorts for Malayalam films with a big bunch of experimental films that hit all the right spots at the same time giving rise to a neo- new wave movement that was nicknamed the “New-Gen” films, all for good cause. We will be ever grateful to this decade for killing out almost all of the tasteless trends disseminated by the last one. Check out the top ten picks of the decade!

10. Drishyam 2013

For giving us a mystery where we felt more for the murderers and less for the murdered with an almost foolproof plot about a family struggling to keep it together against forces hell-bent on ripping them apart.

9. Premam 2015

For being the innumerably re-watchable blast of a movie with the perfect coming-of-age romance story that never stopped at being fun… And for giving us Malar!

8. Shutter 2012

For giving us one of the best thrillers in Malayalam language with an original setting and a socially relevant subject matter that never let go of the reigns to your nerves till the very end.

7. Annayum Rasoolum 2013

For the endearing innocence of Anna and Rasool caught amidst the hatred of our times and set against a sprawling backdrop pictured by the trained eyes of cinematographer turned director and giving us an intense and fulfilling Romeo & Juliet.

6. Virus  2019

For being the first-of-its-kind disaster management narrative in Malayalam based on true events where it kept intact the reality and made us feel for the characters by never stopping to thrill on a medical calamity that got too close.

5. Kumbalangi Nights 2019

For making the lives of a bunch of social misfits so endearing that even the house on the “shit-land” will stay afloat in our minds humming its beautiful background score, and for offering us delightful re-watches ever since its home video release for many years to come.

4. Take-Off 2017

For giving us one hell of a survival story and a thrill ride with great production and poignant performances, at the same time visualizing a foreign skirmish believably.

3. Sudani From Nigeria 2018

For the freshness of theme and character sketches as well as for dealing with universal concepts of humanity and compassion by tugging at our heartstrings for a little bit here and there by keeping our smiles in place.

2. Angamali Diaries 2017

For being one bombastic fun ride with its robust and endearing “local” flavor wrung dry for maximum benefit with zesty cinematic style skillfully executed through clever direction and competent acting by over 85 debutantes.

1. Maheshinte Prathikaram 2016

For beautifully layering with playful details a story celebrating small things in life and giving it to us in such straightforward elegance that the finesse of the final product was out-of-the-world brilliance.

This decade gave us a lot more than the previous one. So the list ideally must go on:

Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum 2017

Pranchiyettan & the Saint 2010
