film Paleri Manikyam |
Villains have always been an
integral part of movie history, and the share of its Malayalam contributions
have some brilliant ones that have stood out and have become more memorable
than their good counterparts over time owing to their seething wickedness and idiosyncrasies
that made us cringe with aversion. Following is a list of the very best of such
bad guys that have enticed us with their sheer evilness and corruption in
Malayalam films.
15. Mundakkal Shekharan in Devasuram
(Napoleon)
Mundakkal Shekharan for the most part would have
ended up being a regular villain- merciless and dangerous all right- if not for
the series of endless conflicts put up by his worthy opponent, Mangalassery
Neelakandan, whose eccentricities called for high performance to match.
14. Union Leader Prabhakaran in Varavelpu
(Murali)
Union Leader Prabhakaran is a whopping hurdle, and represents all those stubborn obstacles that impede our growth in
life. It also characterizes the corrupt “faux-cialism” practiced for personal
gains that bogs progress in this day and age.
13. Paniyan in Kaliyattam (Lal)
An innovative manifestation of William
Shakespeare ‘Iago’, Paniyan is a very dangerous man to be with. Staying away
from this manipulative and shrewd man alone could have averted all the
tragedies in the lives of Kannan and Thamara that led to their miserable ends.
12. P.K. Jayarajan in Uyarangalil
(Mohanlal)
P.K. Jayarajan is a womanizing psychopath and a
stubborn go-getter who makes sure his treacherous way is always clear come what
may- even taking lives. This is one of those very rare occasions when
Mohanlal’s sheer presence will send willies up your spines.
11. Swami Amoothananda in Ekalavyan
(Narendra Prasad)
The fearless god-man Swami Amoothananda sits at
the core of an international crime web controlling narcotics. He is hypnotic
and extremely powerful with an unconditional sway on the sea of devotees
swarming at his feet for his blessings the world over.
10. John Honai in In Harihar
Nagar (Riza Bava)
A very
intimidating presence introduced at the pinnacle of one of the most successful
comic capers in the Malayalam language, John Honai is not only a killjoy, but
also a sadistic thug with a sophisticated façade clearly meant to be detested.
9. Mohan Thomas in Commissioner (Ratheesh)
This smooth talking criminal mastermind is a conniving
opponent to the celebrated pop icon Bharath Chandran, IPS. His faith in evil is
more threatening than the evil he embodies, and the calm reassurance he invests
in his own power is as unnerving as is annoying.
8. Kolappulli Appan in Aaraam
Thampuran (Narendra Prasad)
Kolappulli Appan is twisted and vindictive. Like
a beast relentlessly licking on its wound, he dusts up his hatred every other
day waiting for the right time to pounce. The cut that blinded his right eye
remains as the souvenir of his bad deeds in the past.
7. Keerikadan Jose in Kireedam (Mohan
Raj)
Keerikadan Jose is arguably one of the most
recognized names of all Malayalam movie villains. For most part of the film, he
remains an ominous resonance that threatens to appear any moment, and when he
finally emerges in a destructive temper he wreaks havoc indeed.
6. Mirza Khan in Kalapani (Amrish
Puri)
A ruthless and violent jail warden, Mirza Khan
subjects the prisoner’s of the eponymous cellular jail to inhuman punishments.
As a tool in the hands of his British superior he is absolutely horrifying as
he acts without contemplating the atrocity of his deeds.
5. Murikkum Kunnathu Ahmed Haji in Paleri
Manikyam (Mammootty)
This corrupt and abusive landlord with an utter
disregard for human life is a nightmare to citizens and daily life around him. His
unholy despotism is forever filled with anger and lust, and is a true
representation of authority at a time when not many were in control.
4. Paul Pailokaran in Namukku
Parkaan Munthiri Thoppukal (Thilakan)
Paul Pailokaran is an unhinged creep that
openly abuses women and binges on alcohol. Incredibly cynical, devious and
intrusive, he inflicts both physical and psychological damages on people around
him, and you will want to run for your life with someone like that in the
neighborhood.
3. Aiyappan in Yavanika
(Bharath Gopi)
This one is a true beast, and is one of the
most disgusting characters in Malayalam cinema ever. The picture we get of
Aiyappan from testimonies of various people from his life is despicable to the
bones, and we are only glad that he is away- missing or murdered.
2. Karimbootham in My Dear
Kuttichathan (Kottarakkara Sreedharan Nair)
This malevolent sorcerer is every child’s
nightmare, and is frightening both in appearance and deeds. The most fearful
part about this dark force in search of the fabled treasures is his uncanny
stealth, and the feeling that he could very well be standing right behind you
this very moment.
1. Bhaskara Patelar in Vidheyan
(Mammootty)
Bhaskara Patelar is everything that is worst in
all of us. His cruelty and the sheer absence of any redeeming qualities make him
the numero uno of villainy, and it is
the unpredictability of this profane force of nature as much as his
idiosyncrasies that helps make him the epitome of horror.
