20 OF THE MOST MEMORABLE ROLES PORTRAYED BY THILAKAN IN MALAYALAM FILMS

Padma Shri Surendranath Thilakan, mononymously known as Thilakan, is an actor beyond compare and is undoubtedly one of the greatest in India. He is one of the key figures that shaped the modern Malayalam Cinema to its present form bringing realistic acting to the table during the nascent stages of its evolution. Extremely dexterous and versatile, there is not a genre that he has not mastered in looking at his illustrious career that won him numerous accolades on the way. While he was unnerving as the depraved stepfather in Namukku Parkkan Munthitithoppukal, he was also hilarious as the paranoid villain in Nadodikkattu and heartbreaking as the father of the doomed hero in Kireedam at the same.

It would be a hopeless effort to compare his roles based on performances, as they were all par excellence. So following is a list of 20 of the most memorable roles played by this acting behemoth that stayed with us all these years after his departure.

18 UNFORGETTABLE CHARACTERS PLAYED BY INNOCENT in Malayalam films

Innocent Vareed Thekkethala, mononymously known as Innocent is one of the most popular comedians working in Malayalam Cinema today. He is among those actors who, despite having the ‘actor’ overshadowing the ‘character’ with his trademark mannerisms and unyielding accent, pull it through effectively every time. Like Mamukkoya and Kuthiravattom Pappu, he has been stuck in an accent muzzle with his obstinate Thrissur lilt that once hung above the head of the Achayan accent in Kottayam Kunjachan and Kayyur Accent in Meenamasathile Sooryan (which could be overlooked as nobody including the scriptwriter got it right there). Nevertheless he is one of our all time favorites, and we do have his different characters etched into our memories each distinct from the other, however slightly like the cards in a deck. Following is a list of some of his most unforgettable characters thus far, many of which have made us laugh till it hurt.

10 COMMENDABLE ON-SCREEN ACCENTS by actors in Malayalam Movies

film Amaram
Accents and slangs are a part and parcel of language, and every region has their very own. In Kerala there are more number of accents than there are districts. Malayalam spoken in some regions in Kasargod can perplex the hell out of someone from Fort Kochi, and someone from Trivandrum might even get offended, and the bridge runs both ways. Yet in Malayalam Cinema, accents are a largely overlooked area. Apparently training in a regional accent has never been a mandate in preparing for films set there. Even when the scripts get the slang right, the actors mess up the accents. Obviously being able to effectively fake a foreign accent is a great gift and that not many have. But then there are always exceptions how much ever little, and some actors have long established it as their strong suit. Following is a list of some of the best efforts at faking different regional accents in Malayalam Cinema thus far.

10 OF THE BEST SATHYAN ANTHIKKAD FILMS thus far

film Thalayanamanthram

Sathyan Anthikkad is undoubtedly one of the best film directors working in Malayalam cinema today, although for the past couple of years he seems to have been grappling with a series of paltry scripts jading his reputation. But we still have faith in him. He has already proved himself to be the unparalleled master of people’s cinema in the actual sense of the word, and anybody Malayali at heart will be able to relate to every last detail addressed in his films. His heroes are always the common man and his setting, the quintessential Malayali middle-class. His collaborations with the clever scripts of Sreenivasan and Ragunath Paleri have gifted us with some of the most lighthearted gems addressing serious and prevalent social issues. Following is a list of some of his best films that you most certainly don’t want to miss.

25 MEMORABLE PERFORMANCES BY NON-MALAYALI ACTORS in Malayalam films

film Vaishali
In a country like India where language changes every few hundred kilometers, it would be ridiculous for an actor to stick to just his mother tongue when it comes to choice of films, as that will mean drawing a very close circle around the range of characters he or she would end up doing in a lifetime. So understandably there are countless crossover collaborations flushing the language barrier down the tube. In Malayalam films we have had numerous non-Malayali actors from all over the country portraying incredible characters that are not just memorable but also amazing depictions winning coveted awards and everything. Following is a list of such memorable performances, some of which are so iconic they have earned a place in Malayalam pop culture, although they are not all famous for necessarily playing Malayalam speaking characters.

10 SPOT-ON PERFORMANCES BY ACTORS CAST AGAINST TYPE in Malayalam movies

film Vaishali
It is only understandable why it is extremely difficult to escape typecasting when it comes to film actors, as there is always a kind of role that a particular actor seemingly does better than the rest staying within the comfort zone. But every once in a while we see brave moves from a few of them at trying out roles diametrically opposite to their trademark image. There have been instances when it terribly backfired, like when Kavya Madhavan deplorably played a retard and slaughtered it. Then there are also times when with brilliant performances they show us a new side shining another part on their versatility spectrum. Following is a list of such incredibly bold casting where actors played characters totally against their type and remarkably owned it.
